Numa época em que aparecem doidos pra dizer que tatuagem de borboleta em mulheres é um problema, inventando significados que a maioria das pessoas acredita sem saberem que estão errados, é importante uma pesquisa séria pra mostrar que as tattoos não tem nada a ver com a personalidade de pessoas tatuadas! Uma pesquisa feita pela Michigan State University, publicada no site Science Direct, especializado em artigos de estudos científicos e médicos, afirma que as pessoas que formam opiniões sobre indivíduos tatuados somente por causa da tinta em seu corpo, estão equivocadas!

Virou meio que um senso comum que dá pra distinguir se uma pessoa é amável ou agressiva, apenas analisando os estilos e tipos de tatuagens que se tem a mostra, mas isso se revela totalmente errado quando se pede pras pessoas donas das tattoos se descreverem.

As tatuagens viraram extremamente comuns nos EUA, em uma recente pesquisa descobriram que um terço da população tem pelo menos uma tattoo. E ainda assim ter tatuagem carrega aquele estigma social antigo do preconceito. Pessoas continuam julgando as outras através dos desenhos em seu corpo, classificando algumas como rebeldes, neuróticas, não confiáveis e por aí vai, daí pra frente é só pra trás! A maioria das pesquisas anteriores focou em saber se pessoas com tatuagens são julgadas de forma diferente daquelas que não tem. Mas essa abordagem ignora a rica variedade de tipos e estilos de tatuagens, bem como as razões pessoais por trás delas.

Nessa nova pesquisa os cientistas querem não só explorar como as pessoas julgam a personalidade de pessoas tatuadas, mas tentar ver qual deles pode ser mais certeiro. Se alguns detalhes como o tamanho ou a temática da tatuagem podem influenciar nessa decisão de pré julgamento. Os pesquisadores também perguntaram alguns significados das tattoos nas pessoas, pra ver se isso também ajuda na hora das pessoas darem suas opiniões sobre os tatuados.

O responsável pelo estudo é o Professor de Psicologia da Faculdade do Michigan, e Diretor da Close Relationships Lab, William J. Chopik.

“As pessoas farão todo tipo de suposições sobre indivíduos tatuados: que são arriscados, viciados em substâncias e, em geral, mais negativos. Mas então reconhecemos que alguns desses julgamentos podem depender da aparência da tatuagem. Presumimos que as tatuagens são todas um pouco diferentes umas das outras e que isso poderia orientar os julgamentos. Assim, era menos uma comparação entre alguém com ou sem tatuagem. Em vez disso, sentimos que as pessoas julgariam os indivíduos com base se a tatuagem é algo como uma caveira em chamas ou uma homenagem emocionante com flores.” Explica William.

Como foram feitas as pesquisas?

Eles chamaram 274 pessoas adultas que tinham tatuagem entre 18 e 70 anos de idade. A maioria eram mulheres (71%), e também de pessoas brancas, apesar de pessoas de outras etnias também terem sido representadas na pesquisa. Cada um deles respondeu um questionário específico que focava nas cinco dimensões da nossa personalidade. As cinco dimensões da personalidade, conhecidas como o modelo dos “Cinco Grandes” ou “Big Five”, são: extroversão, docilidade, conscienciosidade, abertura a novas experiências e neuroticismo. Esses traços são contínuos, com cada indivíduo possuindo diferentes níveis em cada dimensão. 

Os participantes aceitaram falar abertamente sobre os motivos e significados das tatuagens, e também foram feitas fotografias das tattoos. Foram coletadas e catalogadas um total de 375 tatuagens diferentes, alguns dividiram duas tattoos para o estudo, mas a maioria foi de uma única arte corporal por voluntário.

As fotos foram apresentadas junto com uma breve descrição pessoal para um grupo de 30 pesquisadores, sejam estudantes ou graduados e professores treinados em Psicologia. Metade dos avaliadores foi solicitada a analisar a personalidade dos indivíduos tatuados apenas com base na foto. A outra metade recebeu a foto e uma explicação escrita do significado da tatuagem. Nenhum dos avaliadores julgou a mesma tatuagem em ambos os formatos. Todos os avaliadores usaram a mesma escala de personalidade para julgar o quão amável, consciencioso, extrovertido, neurótico e aberto a novas experiências eles acreditavam que a pessoa tatuada era.

Para analisar os julgamentos, os pesquisadores empregaram um modelo de lente: uma estrutura que examina como as pessoas usam pistas visíveis no ambiente (neste caso, as características da tatuagem) para formar impressões e se essas pistas realmente refletem os traços que parecem sinalizar. Os avaliadores também analisaram 18 características específicas da tatuagem, como tamanho, estilo, imagens (por exemplo, vida versus morte) e quão “zoeira” ou séria a tatuagem parecia.

No geral, as pessoas foram bastante consistentes em como julgaram as tatuagens. Os avaliadores tenderam a concordar uns com os outros sobre o que certas características da tatuagem poderiam sugerir sobre a personalidade. Por exemplo, tatuagens alegres e coloridas foram associadas a impressões de maior amabilidade. Tatuagens grandes e de aparência tradicional foram ligadas a maior extroversão. Já tatuagens que pareciam de baixa qualidade ou incluíam imagens de morte levaram os avaliadores a perceber o usuário como mais neurótico ou menos amável.

E os resultados?

No entanto, esses julgamentos foram em grande parte imprecisos. Quando os pesquisadores compararam como os participantes foram avaliados com a forma como eles se descreveram, a maioria das ligações entre as características da tatuagem e a personalidade se desfez! Exceto por um padrão: pessoas que tinham tatuagens descritas pelos avaliadores como “zoeiras” ou excêntricas, eram um pouco mais propensas a pontuar mais alto em abertura à experiência em suas autoavaliações.

Adicionar uma descrição do significado da tatuagem não melhorou consistentemente a precisão dos julgamentos. Embora incluir a história por trás de uma tatuagem tenha aumentado o consenso entre os avaliadores ao julgar traços como neuroticismo, isso não melhorou significativamente a capacidade deles de avaliar se a tatuagem refletia a personalidade real da pessoa.

Um dos resultados mais claros veio da comparação da validade da pista (se os traços da tatuagem realmente refletem a personalidade) com a utilização da pista (se os avaliadores dependem desses traços ao fazer julgamentos). Para a maioria dos traços de personalidade, os avaliadores usaram pistas que tinham pouca ou nenhuma conexão com a forma como os indivíduos tatuados realmente se viam. A única correspondência significativa entre a validade e a utilização da pista foi encontrada para a abertura à experiência. Neste caso, tatuagens julgadas como mais excêntricas ou incomuns foram usadas pelos avaliadores e modestamente indicativas do nível real de abertura de uma pessoa.

Para os outros traços como: amabilidade, extroversão, neuroticismo e conscienciosidade, as pistas visuais em que os avaliadores confiaram não eram indicadores válidos. Na verdade, para alguns traços, as pistas usadas foram negativamente correlacionadas com os autorrelatos reais. Isso significa que os avaliadores não estavam apenas chutando errado, às vezes eles estavam consistentemente equivocados. Se nem um monte de pesquisador e professor de psicologia conseguem acertar, que dirá o Tonhão do Tiktok! Fala sério!

“Fizemos um trabalho bastante aprofundado para tentar codificar aspectos das tatuagens. Uma razão pela qual os pesquisadores fazem isso é para tentar descobrir como as pessoas estão usando algo como o tamanho da tatuagem ou se ela é colorida (ou tem flores) para fazer julgamentos sobre as pessoas. Então, uma coisa surpreendente é o quão pouco as pessoas estavam usando características particulares das tatuagens.”

“Havia alguns indicadores, como se uma tatuagem fosse excêntrica/zoeira, aos quais as pessoas estavam se apegando (o que era de fato um indicador preciso). Mas foi um pouco estranho ver que as pessoas concordavam nos julgamentos, mas não conseguíamos identificar exatamente o que estava guiando esses julgamentos.” Diz o responsável pela pesquisa, Dr Chopik.

As descobertas sugerem que embora as pessoas se sintam confiantes ao fazer suposições sobre os outros com base em suas tatuagens, essas suposições raramente se sustentam. Tatuagens parecem convidar a julgamentos de personalidade, e as pessoas tendem a usar atalhos mentais consistentes baseados na arte que veem. Mas, na maioria dos casos, esses julgamentos não refletem a realidade. Eles são moldados mais por estereótipos e preconceitos, impressões superficiais do que por diferenças psicológicas significativas.

“Isso é chamado de “consenso”  (que as pessoas chegam a um consenso sobre como julgar indivíduos com tipos específicos de tatuagens). Mas esses julgamentos eram precisos? Na verdade, não! Houve alguma evidência de que as tatuagens ajudaram as pessoas a avaliar se alguém era aberto a experiências (por exemplo, artístico, mente aberta, explorador) com base em sua tatuagem, e de fato essa pessoa era aberta a experiências. Mas, em geral, os julgamentos não eram precisos, mesmo que as pessoas tendessem a compartilhar uma mesma ideia sobre o que pensam de alguém com aquela tatuagem.” Conta o Dr William Chopik.

O estudo é um dos primeiros a utilizar um modelo estruturado para testar se as pessoas conseguem julgar com precisão a personalidade com base em tatuagens. Ainda assim, os autores notam algumas limitações. As pistas de tatuagem analisadas foram relativamente amplas, e os pesquisadores não exploraram em profundidade como ou por que os observadores fizeram os julgamentos que fizeram. Os avaliadores podem ter confiado mais em pressentimentos ou associações culturais do que em qualquer raciocínio consciente.
